Blizzard warnings in effect for parts of West Virginia and western Maryland

Blizzard warning have been issued with snowfall totals of up to 30 cm (12 inches) being forecast across the high western slopes along with gusts of 80 km/h (50 mph) across multiple mountain counties. The warnings are in effect for parts of West Virginia, western Maryland, and western Virginia from 10:00 EST Wednesday, December 10, 2025 to 10:00 EST Thursday, December 11.

The warnings cover Western Garrett County in Maryland, Western Grant and Western Pendleton Counties in West Virginia, Eastern Preston and Eastern Tucker Counties in northern West Virginia, Western Greenbrier County, and Southeast Webster, Northwest Pocahontas, and Southeast Randolph Counties.

Snow accumulations are generally forecast in the 8–20 cm (3–8 inches) range, with locally higher amounts of 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) along western-facing slopes above about 760 m (2 500 feet) on and west of the Allegheny Front.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 70–80 km/h (45–50 mph), producing widespread blowing and drifting snow and reducing visibility to 0.4 km (0.25 miles) or less.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of hazardous to nearly impossible travel conditions at times, affecting the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

An initial band of snow is forecast to move in late Wednesday morning. The Baltimore/Washington and Charleston forecast offices expect a possible lull during the early to mid-afternoon before snow intensifies again from late afternoon into Wednesday night, when blizzard conditions are most likely to redevelop.

Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel. If travel is unavoidable, the NWS urges motorists to carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded. Road condition updates are available via 5-1-1 hotlines.
